BE WATER WISE AND STAY SAFE

BE WATER WISE AND STAY SAFE

June 27, 2024

Heading to the coast or out on the water is a great way to have fun and stay active. But, unfortunately it’s a lot easier to get into trouble in the water than you might think. Open water can catch even the strongest of swimmers out, be it the cold temperature of the water, the deceiving depths, rip currents, wind and other threatening factors.

For instance, did you know the average sea temperature around the UK and Ireland is just 12°C and inland waters like lakes and rivers can be colder, even in the summer? Even in hot weather, the water temperature is cold enough to cause cold water shock, which can steal air from your lungs and leave you helpless in seconds.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU OR SOMONE ELSE GETS INTO DISTRESS IN THE WATER

There are 2 simple skills you should know that could save your life, or someone else’s life:

  • If you get into difficulty in the water, float to increase your chances of survival (go on your back, tilt your head, ears submerged and move your hands).
  • If you see someone in trouble in the water, call 999 (ask for the Fire & Rescue Service inland or the Coastguard if at the coast).

STAYING SAFE IN AND AROUND WATER

Please remember, not all water fatalities meant to be in the water. Some people were trying to rescue someone else or a pet, others have tripped and fell into the water. Our natural instinct may be to jump and try to rescue someone or an animal in distress, however a rescue for one can very quickly become a search for two.

Please do not enter the water to attempt a rescue. You can help by:

  • Call 999 (ask for the Fire & Rescue Service inland or the Coastguard if at the coast).
  • Reach or throw something that floats, don’t go in.
  • Don’t swim alone & make sure family/friends know your whereabouts.
  • Make sure your phone is charged.
  • Wear a wetsuit or flotation device.

Manus, a volunteer crew member with Lough Neagh Rescue gives an excellent overview of tips and dangers of the water. This is a must-watch and we encourage you to listen and share with family and friends.

Please don’t take risks and respect the water.
