Youth Start and Discover Paddlesport Programme

A fun, safe and confidence‑building introduction to paddlesport for young people aged 10–17

The Youth Start and Discover Paddlesport Programme, delivered by Paddle NI, is a four‑week introduction to paddlesport designed to help young people build confidence, learn new skills and enjoy being on the water in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment.

Across the programme, participants will primarily use stable, accessible craft that will help them learn quickly and feel confident from the very first session.

What young people will experience

Each weekly session blends:

  • Practical paddling skills to help young people progress at their own pace
  • Games and challenges that build confidence and keep sessions fun
  • Exploration and adventure on the water
  • Safety awareness and essential knowledge for being around water

Participants will develop key paddling techniques, improve their water confidence and learn how to stay safe while enjoying new experiences outdoors.

More than just paddling

Throughout the programme, young people will:

  • Make new friends
  • Work together as a team
  • Build communication, creativity and resilience
  • Challenge themselves in a supportive, encouraging environment

Whether they’re taking their first strokes or already have some experience, every session is designed to be engaging, welcoming and rewarding.

A pathway into lifelong paddling

Youth Start and Discover is just the beginning. Over the four weeks, participants will be introduced to the wider world of paddlesport, including local clubs, regular sessions, development opportunities and progression pathways supported by Paddle NI.

Our aim is to inspire a lifelong enjoyment of being on the water and help every young person continue their paddling journey long after the programme ends.
