‘See Sports Challenge’ shows that sport is for everyone!
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council is delighted to be working in partnership with the Royal National Institute of Blind People NI (RNIB) to deliver the ‘See Sports Challenge’, an exciting initiative designed to bring blind and partially sighted people from across Northern Ireland together to take part in unique outdoor sports activities!
As the Council’s twist on the ‘See Sports Differently’ initiative, this two-year programme encourages individuals, families and groups to get active, push their limits and experience the benefits of inclusive sports.
The programme is funded by The Primary Club – James Fund and supported by RNIB NI and aims to encourage participants to develop new skills and build confidence in a variety of sporting activities, both individually and as a team.
The programme caters for blind and partially sighted people of all ages with sessions open to adults, 18–35-year-olds and children/families.
Outdoor sporting sessions include canoeing, kayaking, stand-up-paddleboarding, power boating, angling, climbing, archery, walking, cycling, snow skiing and snow tubing.
Speaking about the programme, Lord Mayor Councillor Sarah Duffy said: “Across council we are committed to ensuring services, facilities and activities are inclusive and accessible to everyone. I am delighted that the See Sports Challenge enables blind and partially sighted people of all ages and abilities, both from within and outside the borough to experience some of the incredible sports and facilities we have to offer.”
Una Mulgrew from RNIB NI added: “Sports and exercise positively impact physical and mental health. It can improve mood, reduce anxiety and improve self-esteem. Blind and partially sighted people (BPS) experience loneliness and isolation, employment levels are not high and confidence is low.
“Sport is a great forum for people to meet, engage and build friendships. Our members share audio described photos and videos encouraging others and showing people that pushing boundaries is not just for sighted people. The fun and laughter are infectious during the programme and participant numbers are growing!
“This partnership with Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council is particularly special for us, giving BPS people opportunities to try new things! It’s a win-win project!”
