NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS STARTING TO WANE?
Did you ring in the new year with new fitness, health or lifestyle goals? Maybe you promised yourself you’d try new things or do more of what you love. We’ve all been there, done that and the struggle is real! In reality, things may not be going to plan or you’ve called it quits altogether? We’ve put together our top 3 simple yet effective tips to help you stay on track (or get back at it!).
#1 Get SMART
Setting a SMART goal is more likely to help you achieve your goals. By SMART we mean:
S – Specific: skip vague goals and be very detailed about what you want to achieve.
M – Measurable: make sure your goal can be measured (in reps, weight, minutes, days, etc).
A – Achievable: be realistic. A goal that’s impossible will never be reached.
R – Relevant: make sure you really want the goal to keep you motivated.
T – Time-bound: have an end date of when you want to achieve your goal.
Let’s put this into practice! Instead of being vague by saying “I want to exercise more” you could try this “I want to get fitter and get outdoors more by going for a 30 minute, at least four days a week.” Now you know what you want to achieve and how to go about it!
#2 Give yourself a break!
Things don’t always go to plan! It’s important to note too that goals may shift and change from time to time. While you may have the best of intentions and really want to do your best to stick to your plan, you may have to make some tweaks and adjustments to your goal to meet yourself where you are – and that’s ok too. Remember, it doesn’t matter how slow you go, just don’t stop.
#3 Brighter days ahead
January can be a slog, with shorter days and longer night, not to mention the drop in temperatures and the ‘feeling-out-of-sorts’ after the holidays. Feeling tired and demotivated is very common and don’t worry, you’re not alone. The tiny yet visible signs of spring can reinforce that winter is nearly over and we can look forward to longer days and hopefully some better weather, which may ultimately help. Have you stopped to notice the spring buds starting to appear?
Here’s to getting your resolutions going beyond January!
