Employee Wellbeing Award win for ABC Get Moving Business AG Wilson

Congratulations to AG Wilson who were crowned Wellbeing at Work champions at the recent Business in the Community Awards!

The company is a civil engineering contractor headquartered in Portadown. Since joining the ABC Get Businesses Moving programme in early 2023 the company has gone from strength to strength in embedding employee wellbeing, safety performance and business sustainability across all aspects of the organisation.

Shauna McKay, Head of Business Operations at AG Wilson Limited, said: “Our ‘Working Well at AG Wilson’ framework creates a structured and proactive approach to employee wellbeing built around three pillars – physical wellbeing, mental and psychosocial wellbeing and health promotion and prevention. This framework is supported by visible leadership, health champions, mental health first aiders, external partnerships and a defined governance process to ensure wellbeing remains embedded throughout the organisation.”

Working with the ABC Get Businesses Moving team, AG Wilson staff have been involved in the council’s Couch to 5K and 10K progression programmes and the annual Get Businesses Moving Games, where businesses take part in a range of fun and competitive activities, alongside workplace health checks delivered through the Chest Heart & Stroke ‘Work Well, Live Well’ programme.

Speaking about the ABC Business Games, Shauna added: “The business games brought together colleagues from across various functions within the business. The event encouraged our employees to step away from their desks, be active and enjoy time together in a fun and inclusive environment, while strengthening the sense of teamwork and connection that is central to the company’s wellbeing culture.” 

The company also works with Cancer Focus NI, NICHS, external training providers and the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity to deliver mental health awareness sessions, while mental health first aiders provide peer support and signposting.

The BITCNI Awards judges were impressed with AG Wilson’s strong commitment to the wellbeing of both its employees and the wider community. They added, “As a family run business, the company’s core values were clearly reflected in the thoughtful ways they support their people from creating a “home away from home” for staff working in Scotland, to providing a glamping site where employees’ families can visit and stay connected.

“The company’s approach fully embodies the Take 5 theme of connection, helping employees to build strong relationships with family, friends and the wider community. They really showed that it’s the small things that can make the biggest difference to employee wellbeing.”
