Give a child a brighter future
HSC NI Foster Care appeals to the sporting community to think about fostering
Melanie Coffey, Senior Manager for Fostering & Adoption in the Southern Area, has emphasised the need for more foster carers to come forward. She said:
“Partnerships between HSCNI and sporting bodies can be very powerful. Sports clubs and organisations are invested in promoting the wellbeing of the young people who take part and this aligns perfectly with the work of HSC NI Foster Care.”
Cullyhanna GAC Captain, Pearse Casey, is an enthusiastic supporter of the appeal and leads the call for more sporting families to consider fostering. Pearse Casey said:
“The support we received from our family, friends and community was instrumental in helping us win the All-Ireland title. This is something that all young people deserve to have in their lives. I would encourage sporting families who can offer this kind of experience and inclusiveness to think about fostering. You can literally change the life of a young person and help them realise their own dreams.”
CROSSING THE FINISH LINE TOGETHER:
Oliver (10), Jayden (12) and Caleb (16) are lined up ready for the 5k dash around Castlewellan Forest Park. At the sound of the gun, they started off in their own way, making their best effort to run around the circular trail. Oliver and Jayden had raced out to an early lead, but as they approached the finish line they noticed their foster brother, Caleb, had fallen behind.
Oliver and Jayden slowed down and looked back at him. Then without hesitation, they turned around and began running in the other direction towards Caleb. Even though by turning back and helping Caleb, they lost their chance to finish the run sooner, they had smiles on their faces because they knew they had done the right thing. The three boys crossed the finish line together, encouraged by the thunderous applause and cheers from mother, and foster carer, Anna.
Anna is proud to share that Caleb has developed his strength and confidence through running in foster care and he is now a regular parkrun participant.
