Get Businesses Moving: AG Wilson

April 29, 2024

AG Wilson has been a Get Moving partner since March 2023. The programme compliments AG Wilson’s existing workplace wellbeing programme, particularly for office staff in more sedentary roles. To date the team has been working with the council’s Get Moving support team to participate in footgolf, couch to 5k, 5k-10k and table tennis, all of which have been positively received across the company.

Getting involved in this year’s Belfast City Marathon is the biggest challenge to face the team yet! They have 3 relay teams comprising of 2 mixed and 1 all-male team and Fergal Mackle (Cost Manager) is going solo and tackling the full marathon! The company is fundraising for Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, which is dedicated to providing emotional, physical and financial support to construction workers and their families.

Speaking about the company’s involvement with the Get Moving programme, Shauna McKay (Health & Safety Manager) says: “The marathon teams are a mix of office based and site-based personnel of varying fitness levels. For those new to running, training kicked off in January with the ABC Council’s Couch to 5k programme followed by the 5k-10k programme for anyone who wanted to increase their distance.

“Since then, some participants got involved in their local park runs including City Park, Wallace Park and Portrush East Strand Park run, whilst others took to local roads, pavements and tow paths. One of our more experienced team members recently took part in the London Landmarks Half Marathon and on the other end of the scale, our youngest relay runner is 19 and a keen footballer.”

Due to the nature of their work covering all NI geographical regions, many of the AG Wilson team live outside the ABC area and some even face the challenge of working away from home in Scotland. Although this prevents many from meeting up for group runs, the team manage to keep in touch and continue to support each other on a group chat, sharing run records and celebrating PBs!

Shauna adds, “There has been great competitive spirit and banter between the teams with some colleagues aiming for respectable times and others like myself just wanting to survive!”

We wish the AG Wilson team the best of luck with the marathon and continued enjoyment on their get moving journey with us!
