Move more for your mental health
The theme of the Mental Health Foundation‘s Mental Health Awareness Week (13-19 May) is ‘Movement: moving more for your mental health.’
Looking after our bodies and staying physically fit has the knock-on effect of boosting our mental health – when we move more, it’s good for the body and mind!
So, what is mental health? Mental health is our emotional, psychological and mental well-being. It affects how we think, feel and behave.
Many of us struggle to move enough throughout the day. Whether it’s down to bad weather, work commitments, poor health or feeling socially isolated, over one third of UK adults do not meet the recommended amount of activity. Ultimately and through time, this has a negative impact on our bodies and minds.
The Mental Health Foundation is also keen to stress that this year’s campaign is not an ‘exercise’ campaign. Rather the focus is on finding moments for movement to support good mental health and emotional calm. Go for a walk, run or jog, swim, cycle – the important thing is to find an activity that works for you!
