Russell White does the Daily Mile with Tandragee Primary School

February 18, 2023

The pupils and staff of Tandragee Primary School were recently treated to a visit by the Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Councillor Paul Greenfield and local Olympian Russell White as winners of Council’s recent Daily Mile Santa Run Competition.

The pupils and staff alike were delighted to have the opportunity to run alongside the local Banbridge Triathlete whilst completing their Daily Mile and can now say they are in an elite band of individuals who have run alongside an Olympian.

Russell also took the time to speak to the pupils and staff within a special assembly and shared his personal journey through sport leading right up to his Olympic experience. Russell’s key message was that with hard work, focus and dedication, anything is possible.

Russell is supported by Council and the ABC Sports Forum and is a current recipient of an Ambassador Bursary which recognises athletes who can be regarded as outstanding examples of Northern Ireland Sportsmen or Sportswomen.

The Lord Mayor, Councillor Paul Greenfield commented:

The Daily Mile is a fantastic initiative which provides the opportunity to enjoy a fun and sustainable physical activity that positively impacts the health and wellbeing for everyone. It’s great to see schools such as Tandragee Primary School placing such an importance in providing daily physical activity opportunities for their pupils and I would encourage all schools to get involved.

Russell commented,

It was great to visit Tandragee Primary School and meet with all the pupils and staff. Sport has provided me with so many opportunities and it was great to be able to run a Daily Mile with all the pupils and share my experiences with them during an assembly. I would encourage all pupils to continue to enjoy being active whilst having fun with their friends leading to improved health and happiness.

Working in partnership with the Southern Health and Social Care (SHSC) Trust, ABC Council is committed to building a Daily Mile network of schools across the area, where all children, young people and adults can experience the many benefits of Daily Mile on a regular basis. Once registered through the Daily Mile Foundation, schools will receive all the support and resources needed to implement and sustain the initiative, as well as receiving localised assistance from ABC Council and SHSC Trust. To date over 50 schools across the Borough have signed up.  The Daily Mile is organised by the Daily Mile Foundation in partnership with the Daily Mile Network NI.
